General Statistics
- The estimated residential population of Queensland people identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander as at June 2001 was 126,000 or 3.5 per cent of the total Queensland population.
- About 50 per cent of Indigenous Queenslanders live in large urban and regional centres, compared with 80 per cent of non-Indigenous Queenslanders.
- Approximately 27 per cent of Indigenous Queenslanders live in remote or very remote areas, compared with 5 per cent of non-Indigenous Queenslanders.
- About 20 per cent of Indigenous Queenslanders live in discrete Indigenous communities.
- About 40 per cent of Indigenous Queenslanders are under 15 years of age compared, with 20.7 per cent of the total Queensland population.
- The level of premature death and disease amongst the Queensland Indigenous population is significantly higher than that amongst Queensland's non-Indigenous population.
