Retail stores
Introduction
The Retail Stores Unit administers six retail stores serving aboriginal communities in Queensland. The retail stores are located at:
- Woorabinda (140 kilometres west of Rockhampton);
- Palm Island (north east of Townsville);
- Doomadgee (approximately 430 kilometres north west of Mt Isa);
- Kowanyama on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula;
- Pormpuraaw (south of Weipa); and
- Lockhart River on the eastern coast of the Cape York Peninsula.
Strategic objectives
The strategic objectives of the retail stores operation are to:
- Operate viably in an environment of price competition.
- Provide a quality retail service in accordance with current best practice in the private retail sector.
- Ensure that customers have access at all times to the foods they need to stay healthy.
- Monitor and report on the financial and operating performance of the business.
- Modernise plant and equipment.
- Operate network infrastructure, which meets the financial, administration and operating requirement of the business and administers the new taxation system.
Business improvements
Improvements in the retail stores operations have included:
- extensive refurbishment, both practical improvements and improvements designed to dramatically improve customer amenity and the shopping experience;
- professionally designed internal floor layouts;
- modern plant and equipment;
- increased range and product promotion;
- strong store atmosphere;
- vastly improved merchandise presentation;
- food receival, storage, handling and retail practice standards;
- construction of food preparation facilities;
- the introduction of modern retailing technology, for example:
- point of sale and grocery manager stock control systems;
- electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) terminals; and
- cold chain enhancements to enable products to be maintained in a saleable condition for longer periods of time;
- nutrition policy and healthy food promotion;
- investment in staff training and development;
- centralised bulk buying and major procurements;
- centralised group discounts for the stores; and
- group financial and performance management.
A number of stores operating in the Gulf of Carpentaria are isolated from road transport during the annual wet season and consequently increase inventory levels of non-perishable goods and freezer lines to ensure availability. Many perishable lines are air freighted by the store from the nearest major centre during this period.
