Government Champions

Role

Under the Government Champions initiative, introduced by the Queensland Government in 2002, every Chief Executive Officer of a Queensland Government agency is appointed as champion for one or more of the following twenty-two communities (which are either discrete Aboriginal or mainland Torres Strait Islander communities or Cape York communities with a significant Indigenous population): Aurukun; Bamaga; Cherbourg; Coen; Doomadgee; Hope Vale; Injinoo; Kowanyama; Laura; Lockhart River; Mapoon; Mornington Island; Mossman Gorge; Napranum; New Mapoon; Palm Island; Pormpuraaw; Seisia; Umagico; Woorabinda; Wujal Wujal; and Yarrabah.

Government Champions, as the most senior officers in the Queensland Public Service, offer these communities a partner with the capacity to harness combined agency resources to deliver better targeted and more integrated services. They have the authority and the capacity to cut through unnecessary or overly complex bureaucratic 'red tape' and to overcome administrative barriers which impede constructive responses to community needs.
