Queensland Indigenous economic development and employment

The Queensland Government's Smart State vision continues to drive economic growth to improve the quality of life for all Queenslanders. The Partnerships Queensland future directions framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy in Queensland was developed with a consistent vision: to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders have the same prospects for health, prosperity and quality of life as other Queenslanders while ensuring their cultures are affirmed, and heritage sustained.

Queensland's economic growth is forecast to exceed the national average for the 12th consecutive year in 2007-08, while the year-average unemployment rate fell to a 33-year low of 4% in 2006-07 and is predicted to remain there in 2007-08. However, while progress has been made to improve the economic well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders, the reality is that a large gap remains before they fully share in the State's prosperity.

The Queensland Government is serious about working with Indigenous leaders and communities to assist them to achieve economic independence - a pre-condition for better health, prosperity and quality of life. The Queensland Government is a proud sponsor of the Centre for Aboriginal Independence and Enterprise, established to foster cultural, social and community expression, self esteem and economic independence for Aboriginal people.

The initiatives set out in this package represent a suite of Queensland Government reforms to realise Indigenous economic development and employment opportunities and fulfil the Partnerships Queensland goal of "skilled and prosperous people and communities".

The Queensland Government is determined to dismantle the barriers to better economic outcomes for Indigenous people, their families and their communities.

This package looks forward to better economic futures for Indigenous Queenslanders, helps build the foundations for rewarding jobs and economic independence, tackles land tenure and access issues, and acknowledges and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's links to culture and country. Real improvement in the quality of life for Indigenous people and communities will only occur through a combined effort from governments, communities and private and non-government sectors alike.
