
A Year 12 education opens up more opportunities for employment and further study. It's vital that Indigenous students have the same opportunities to successfully complete Year 12 as non-Indigenous students. With these opportunities, students have a greater ability to engage in Queensland's economic, educational and political affairs.
The Queensland Government is taking action to address the gaps between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students:
- in reading, writing and numeracy achievements
- in year 12 attainment or equivalent
- in encouraging and maintaining involvement in learning
Targets and progress measures
The Council of Australian Governments and the Queensland Government have set 2 targets under the National Indigenous Reform Agreement to improve the education and training prospects of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
1. Halve the gap for Indigenous students in reading, writing and numeracy achievements within a decade.
NIRA progress measures
- year 3, 5, 7 and 9 reading, writing and numeracy at or above the national minimum standard (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN))
- participation rates in NAPLAN
2. Halve the gap for Indigenous students in year 12 or equivalent attainment rates by 2020.
NIRA progress measures
- attainment of a Year 12 or equivalent certificate (20-24 year olds)
- retention rates from Year 7/8 to Year 10
- retention rates from Year 7/8 to Year 12
- attendance from Year 1 to Year 10
