Queensland Government
Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples face significant disadvantage in terms of the quality and availability of housing and basic facilities. Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders live in houses that are overcrowded or in need of repairs. Relatively more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders are homeless than non-Indigenous Queenslanders.

The Queensland Government's priorities in improving the home environment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are to:

  • address the problem of overcrowding in Indigenous households
  • provide infrastructure and other essential services

Achieving positive outcomes in these areas will support the successful achievement of other targets, including health.

While acknowledging the cultural significance of outstations to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the Queensland Government's priority focus on funding for infrastructure, including housing and related infrastructure, and service delivery for discrete Indigenous communities over the next 10 years will be within the township areas in line with the COAG National Indigenous Reform Agenda. Government service delivery will not rely on the use of outstations.

Targets and progress measures

There are no Council of Australian Governments (COAG) targets that directly address this strategic action area.

However, improvements in home environment may have long-term impacts on a number of the COAG targets. For example, reducing overcrowding in housing may result in better health outcomes.

Progress measures

  • overcrowding
  • housing condition
  • homelessness
